RIP 2014 - 2019
I started coding BetterSubBox as my graduation project for my high-school IT class in 2014. Since launching that winter I used it everyday and continued working on it, making it better and more comfortable for more people. However, nothing good can last forever.
I had a compliance review from YouTube API team and they deemed BetterSubBox in defiance of the rules. Some of the issues could be fixed (legitimate concerns, mostly related to privacy and data-retention). The main issue is with the whole point of BetterSubBox, marking videos with states, which mimics functionality on YT, which is not allowed (even though I had those features before they had). Because of that I must shut BetterSubBox down.
I'm currently in graduate school and don't have time to fix the issues or to transform BetterSubBox soon, so I am shutting it down for now, to not upset our corporate overlord. It did upset me, since I did actually use it every day since I first launched it. I am going back to YT Subscriptions feeds, who knows, I haven't used it in five years, maybe there's no need for BetterSubBox anymore. I would like to rebuild BetterSubBox in some indirect way, which would comply with YT rules (or ideally... avoided them altogether). I don't know when that will be or what shape it will take, but you can sign up to be notified when I launch it by emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The source code for original BetterSubBox is available on GitLab, you can check it out and maybe launch it yourself, if you're the type of person who can do that, if you do, please email me, I'll use it :) I'm just not up to running the current version on my account... You can also drop me an email and I might be able to help you with anything. I'm also on Twitter.
I'm just rambling at this point. To those who used BetterSubBox, thank you for being here for the ride, hopefully we'll see each other again.
